Location of the place in the municipality of Hoogeveen |
Nieuwlande (in the regional dialect Neilaande ) is a Dutch village with about 1400 inhabitants, which is mainly located in the territory of the municipalities of Hoogeveen and Coevorden in the province of Drenthe . After the Second World War, the place gained national fame, as its inhabitants had saved a large number of Jewish people from being attacked by the German occupiers.
geography
Nieuwlande is located in the south of the province of Drenthe, the village area is administratively divided between the municipalities of Hoogeveen and Coevorden, with the largest part now belonging to Hoogeveen. A few houses are on the other side of the border with the province of Overijssel and are assigned to the local community of Hardenberg . Up until a community reform in 1998, the situation was even more complicated, with the village area being spread over a total of five communities in both provinces. The most important traffic route is the A37 motorway, which runs in the north of the town.
history
The history of the place begins around the year 1850, when the first workers settled here, who worked as peat cutters in the surrounding moorland. In 1890 the place consisted of about 40 houses. After the moors were exploited around 1900, the land was mainly used for agricultural land and grazing areas. The first farmers who came to today's Nieuwlande came from Friesland and Groningen . In 1909 the farmer Jacob Dijkema put the lettering "Nieuwlande" on the roof of his farmhouse, which was adopted by the municipality as the official place name a few years later. Most of the newly arrived farmers were supporters of the Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland , while the workers who were already resident here mostly belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church , which led to social tensions between the two population groups until the 1940s.
At the time of the Second World War and the accompanying persecution of Jews in the Netherlands , the inhabitants of Nieuwlande hid between 90 and 100 Jewish people in a collaborative effort, almost all of whom were able to survive the war. This action brought the place the nickname Drents Palestina (in German "Drentsches Palestine"). The resistance fighter Johannes Post and the pastor Frits Slomp , alias "Frits de Zwerver" (Zwerver means "wanderer"), who significantly initiated and coordinated the relief measures for the Jews , did particularly well . In 1985, the Yad Vashem Memorial honored the place and its inhabitants with the award of Righteous Among the Nations . This makes Nieuwlande, along with the French municipality of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, one of only two places in the world to have received such a collective award.
Attractions
In April 2018 the Onderduikersmuseum opened in the village , which thematically deals with the history of the place in the Second World War and in particular the rescue of the Jews by the inhabitants of Nieuwlandes.
