Nikolai Yevgrafowitsch Ossipow ( Russian: Николай Евграфович Осипов ; * October 12, 1877 in Moscow , † February 19, 1934 in Prague ) was a Russian doctor, psychoanalyst and founder of the "Moscow Psychoanalytic Society".

Career

Osipov was born the only son of a family of doctors. He graduated from high school in Moscow, which he finished in 1897 "summa cum laude". He then studied medicine in Germany and Switzerland and received his doctorate in 1904 at the University of Basel on a histological topic. He then returned to Moscow and worked in the histological department of Moscow University . Ossipow was interested in the neuroses theory of the Viennese psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and visited him in 1910 in Vienna . As early as 1909 he started the magazine "Psichoterapija" together with Nikolai Wyrubow. Ossipow was one of the initiators of a psychoanalytic discussion group in Moscow called the "Little Fridays". In 1911 Ossipow founded the "Moscow Psychoanalytical Society" together with Leonid Drosnés . Osipov was an opponent of Bolshevism. That is why he fled after the October Revolution of 1917 and left his beloved city of Moscow. He fled to Prague via southern Russia and Istanbul in 1921 .

His medical achievements were recognized in Prague. He was offered a professorship at the Medical Faculty of the University of Brno , which he refused due to a lack of language skills. During this time his written correspondence with Freud began, in which Osipov found a friend and supporter. Ossipov discussed with him the psychoanalytic interpretation of the Russian Revolution and Tolstoy's childhood memories . They also discussed the structure of psychoanalysis in Prague. Ossipow suffered from myocarditis , from which he died in Prague in 1934. He was buried in the Russian cemetery in Prague.

Ossipov, who, after his first meeting with Sigmund Freud, set himself the goal of making psychoanalysis known in Russia, is generally considered to be the country's first psychoanalyst.
