Frommhold Nikolai von Rosenbach ( June 12, 1836 in Püssi - May 5, 1901 in St. Petersburg ) was a Russian officer of German-Baltic descent; from 1884 to 1889 he was Governor General of Turkestan .

Life

He was born on June 12 (24), 1836 on the Neu-Isenhof estate, Wesenberg district in Estonia . He received his basic training as a Junker at the school of the Guard Cavalry in St. Petersburg, whereupon he was promoted to ensign on June 17, 1854 and assigned to the Preobrazhensky Life Guard Regiment. On September 8, 1856 he became a lieutenant , on April 15, 1856 he joined the 1st Guard Battalion of the Life Guard and on April 10, 1859 he received the rank of captain . On April 4, 1865, he was promoted to colonel . From August 30, 1867 to September 17, 1870 he commanded the 1st Ekaterinoslav Grenadier Regiment, and in 1877 the Pawlowski Regiment. On March 19, 1877 he was appointed chief of the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Guard Division and on August 30, 1877 promoted to major general.

During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 , Rosenbach crossed the Danube with his brigade at Zimnicea and then fought in the division of the Romanian Prince Karl in front of Pleven. On April 11th he received a golden saber of honor for crossing the Danube with the inscription "For special courage". Then Rosenbach commanded the left column of General Gurko's avant-garde and took part in the storming of Gorni Dubnjak on October 24th . During the storm, Rosenbach was seriously injured by a bullet through the stomach and back. On August 26, 1877, he received the Order of St. George 4th Class. On August 7, 1878 Rosenbach was appointed chief of staff of the Guard Corps, on January 11, 1881 he was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed commander of the St. Petersburg military district. On February 21, 1884 Rosenbach was appointed governor of Turkestan and at the same time appointed commander of the Turkestan military district. In his time the Trans-Caspian Railway was expanded from Samarkand to Tashkent . Rosenbach organized many scientific expeditions to the Tien Shan -Gebirge and the Pamir and was a proponent of the early occupation of the Pamir Mountains by Russian troops. On October 28, 1889, Rosenbach was dismissed from the post of Governor General of Turkestan and appointed a member of the Military Council, where he served in the Administrative Commission for the Rearmament of the Army. On November 21, 1891 he became a member of the State Council. He was a member of the Committee on the Service of Public Service Officials. On December 6, 1895, Rosenbach was promoted to General of the Infantry . He died on May 5, 1901 in St. Petersburg and was buried in the cemetery of the Novodevichy Convent.
