Nikolai von Grünewaldt

Johann Otto Gerhard Nikolai von Grünewaldt , also Nikolai Gerhard von Gruenewaldt (born April 25, 1853 in Ramelshof , Livonia , † January 10, 1922 in Stuttgart ) was a Baltic landscape painter .

Life and family

Nikolai v. G. initially studied engineering at the Stuttgart Polytechnic and from 1874 to 1878 at the University of Riga , which he graduated as an engineer - technologist . From 1878 to 1878 he did not stay in the Baltic States for health reasons . As a trainee he worked in the engineering department of the Riga-Dünaburg Railway from 1880 to 1881 and then until 1883 in the Knighthood Chancellery of the Livonian Knighthood . Afterwards he became a landscape painter and studied at the art school in Stuttgart from 1884 , he was a student of Albert Kappis . His students were Olga Beggrow-Hartmann and Constantin Starck .

Nikolai v. G. came from the German-Baltic noble family von Grünewaldt . His father was the parish judge Johann Gerhard von Grünewald (* 1826, † 1869 in Stuttgart), master of Kastran and Ramelshof in Livonia, who was married to Bertha von Blanckenhagen from the Drobbusch family. Nikolai wasn't married. His great-uncle was the Russian cavalry general and Russian State Councilor Moritz von Grünewaldt (1797–1877).
