Nicholas Wood
Nikolaus Holz (born November 26, 1868 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , † October 23, 1949 in Bad Harzburg ) was a German hydraulic and civil engineering engineer and university professor .
Life
Nikolaus Holz studied at the RWTH Aachen . In 1887 he became a member of the Delta Academic Association, later the Corps Delta. After completing his studies, he began a legal clerkship as a government construction manager , with this title he was named in March 1895. In the same year he began teaching at RWTH Aachen University. In 1896, meanwhile a government master builder ( assessor in the public building administration), he resigned from the civil service at his own request and accepted a professorship for commercial hydraulic engineering and urban civil engineering at RWTH Aachen University. In the university year 1898/1899 he was a member of the RWTH Senate as head of Department II for Civil Engineering. In 1935 he retired .
His main area of work was hydropower plants , especially in Scandinavia and the Alps .
Awards
- In 1895 Nikolaus Holz was awarded the Schinkel Prize by the Berlin Architects' Association in the civil engineering category for the design of a dam.
- In 1900 he received the gold medal at the world exhibition in Paris .
- In 1901 he won first prize from the city of Oslo in the competition for the Solbergfoss hydroelectric power station on Glommen.
- In 1905 he was awarded the Prussian Red Eagle Order, 4th class.
