Nikolaus Löwe , also Louwe , Luwe , Leuwe and Latinized Leo (* in Stettin ; † 1536 in Rostock ) was a German lawyer and university professor.

Life

Nikolaus Löwe enrolled in 1482 to study at the University of Rostock . During the Rostock cathedral feud , he left the city and enrolled at the University of Greifswald in 1493 , where he received his master's degree and in 1497 a licentiate in canon law. In 1499 Löwe became a doctor of canon law in Greifswald. He was there several times, most recently rector of the university from 1501 to 1502, as well as the advice of Duke Bogislaw X. of Pomerania, with whom he later remained in close contact as a valued advisor.

Nevertheless, he moved to the University of Rostock as a full professor in 1503 and was rector of the university for the first time in 1504. Löwe was a sponsor of Ulrich von Hutten , who in gratitude dedicated 1510 distiches to him. In 1515 he was Johannes Hadeke 's point of contact when he tried to gain a foothold in Rostock. During the turmoil of the Wullenwever period and the Reformation , he and the other Rostock university lecturers stood by the old faith. As one of the few Rostock university professors, he held the position in Rostock during this time of the decline of the university and was its rector from Michaelmas 1530 until Easter 1536.

He was proud of his lion name. When two lions donated to the city of Lübeck by the city of Zwolle died in 1523 , he requested in writing from the Lübeck council for one of the skins with reference to his name. Also in his seal he had a lion as a speaking sign.
