Nikolaus Outzen

Nikolaus Outzen (born January 31, 1752 in Terkelsbüll near Tingleff ; † December 5, 1826 ) was a historian , preacher and Frisian linguist .

Outzen was the son of Jens Nissen, a little farmer. After his premature death, he was raised by his maternal grandfather, whose name he adopted. After finishing school, he taught himself as an assistant teacher and at the same time received lessons from the local pastor until he was able to start studying at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel in 1774 . After studying for three years, he became tutor to Balthasar Münter in Copenhagen before taking up his first pastor's position as a deacon in Burg on Fehmarn in 1782 . In 1787 he became a pastor in Breklum , where he worked until his death. There he began to deal with the language and history of the North Frisians .

He was on May 25, 1826 by Friedrich VI. awarded the Knight's Cross of the Dannebrog Order .
