Nikolaus Schweickart (born December 2, 1943 in Kamp-Bornhofen ) is a lawyer, manager of the chemical industry and “ambassador” of the “ New Social Market Economy Initiative ”.

Life

After high school and military service (he is a reserve officer), Nikolaus Schweickart studied law and political science in Bonn , Mainz and Munich from 1966 to 1970 . After the second state examination and admission to the bar, he worked as an assistant in the German Bundestag from 1971 to 1973 and as a political advisor in Bonn from 1973 to 1976. In 1977 Nikolaus Schweickart switched to business and had been working in the Günther Quandt house in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe since March 1, 1977 , initially as head of the supervisory board office of Varta AG , then as a personal employee of Herbert Quandt , later as director and general manager of Altana AG .

From 1983 to 1986 he headed a technology holding company until he was appointed a member of the management board in 1987 and chairman of the management board of Altana AG in 1990. At the same time he became chairman of the board of the Herbert Quandt Foundation .

Nikolaus Schweickart worked, among other things, as an advisor to the main shareholder of Altana AG, Susanne Klatten . In 1987 he became a member of the Management Board of Altana AG and then in 1990 Chairman of the Board.

Schweickart concentrated on the two main business areas of pharmaceuticals (Altana Pharma, Konstanz, originally: Byk Gulden Lomberg Chemische Fabrik GmbH) and Spezial-Chemie (Altana Chemie, Wesel) and developed from the previously relatively small company into a pharmaceutical company with around 30 subsidiaries and Affiliated companies and most recently around 13,300 employees (48 percent of them in Germany).

In September 2006 it became known that Altana AG had sold the pharmaceutical division to the Danish company Nycomed . In 2006, Schweickart also retired from the Altana AG board of directors.

Nikolaus Schweickart is, together with Susanne Klatten, a partner in the “ALTANA Kulturstiftung” in Bad Homburg.

On May 9, 2008, Schweickart was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Drägerwerk AG & Co. KGaA by resolution of the general meeting.
