Nikolaus Fürst von Wrede (born December 26, 1837 in Saint Petersburg , † August 1, 1909 in Gmunden , Salzkammergut ) was an Austrian officer and diplomat from the originally Bavarian noble family of the Prince of Wrede .

biography

He was the grandson of the Bavarian field marshal Carl Philipp von Wrede and was born the son of the imperial Russian colonel, Prince Joseph von Wrede (1800–1871) and his wife Anastasia von Petrowo-Solowowo. In 1861, the parents acquired Sparbersbach Castle near Graz .

Nikolaus von Wrede joined the Imperial and Royal Army , where he became a lieutenant in the Grand Duke of Toscana Dragoons in 1856 . From 1862 he was a captain in the general staff and received the highest commendation for his "excellent behavior" in the German-German War in 1866 .

In 1879 Wrede worked as the Austrian consul general in Belgrade with the rank of major . In 1884 he was appointed Colonel envoy in Athens ; In 1887 he was promoted to major general and was promoted to kuk envoy in Stuttgart . In 1889 Nikolaus von Wrede was promoted to field marshal lieutenant and became his country's envoy to the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1905 he retired there.

Nikolaus von Wrede had married Gabriele Countess von Herberstein (1851-1923) on June 15, 1879 , from which marriage only surviving daughters emerged. The wife was artistic, wrote poetry and sang.

The diplomat wore the Knight's Cross of the Order of Leopold and the Order of the Iron Crown, third class. He was also an imperial chamberlain and privy councilor .
