Baron Nikolaus von Pottenburg , until 1870 Nikolaus Zulauf von Pottenburg (* 1822 in Vienna , † February 18, 1884 in Stuttgart ) was an Austrian diplomat at the time of the Italian and German Wars of Unification.

Life

Nikolaus von Pottenburg studied law at the University of Vienna from 1840 to 1844 , where he a. a. also met with the poet Alexander Julius Schindler . In 1844 he became a concept intern at the Lower Austrian provincial government , and from 1848 served as the secretary of Count Montecuccoli-Laderchi in Count Radetzky's quarters in Lombardy-Veneto . After the revolutions of '48 / 49 he entered the foreign service, from 1852 as legation secretary at the legation in Turin , then in 1854 in the same function in Kassel , and in 1856 in Stockholm . After the outbreak of war in Italy (1859) v. Pottenburg to the British government in London for alliance support for Austria. After further positions in Madrid and Hanover , he became chargé d' affaires in Karlsruhe in 1865 , and was able to keep the Baden government on the Austrian side until the war with Prussia (1866) .

After the Peace of Prague (1866) he was first chargé d'affaires in Bern , then a diplomat. Agent and consul general in Bucharest (1868) and Austrian representative at the Danube Commission . From 1871 in the rank of kuk extraordinary envoy and plenipotentiary minister , he headed a number of European embassies for the next few years: from 1872 in Athens , from 1874 in Stockholm , and from 1879 in Stuttgart (with additional accreditation in Baden and Hessen-Darmstadt) . Pottenburg died in Stuttgart in 1884.

Honors

Pottenburg was ennobled in 1866 and raised to the baron status in 1870.
