Nikolaos "Nikos" Chatzis ( Greek Νικόλαος Χατζής , born June 3, 1976 in Kalamata ) is a former Greek basketball player .

Career

Nikolaos Chatzis began his career in his hometown with the local amateur club Poseidon Kalamatas . In 1995 he received the first professional contract of his career as the newly crowned junior world champion at AEK Athens . Chatzis stayed with AEK until 2005 and was able to win the Saporta Cup in addition to a championship and two cup successes in 2000 . During this period, Chatzis rose to become team captain and has since led the statistics for most top division games, points and assists in AEK's club history. After one season each at Olympiacos Piraeus and Panionios Athens , Chatzis returned to AEK in the summer of 2007. In 2009 he then moved to Ilisiakos Athens before playing for the Arkadikos for a season in 2014.

National team

Chatzis had his greatest success with the national colors of Greece in 1995 when, alongside players like Michalis Kakiouzis , Giorgos Kalaitzis , Dimitris Papanikolaou or Efthimios Rentzias, he won the World Cup with the U-19 national team in front of a home crowd. Chatzis made his debut with the Greek national team on December 18, 1996 in a game against the Bosnian national team. In 2004, after an encounter against Brazil, Chatzis resigned from the national team after 26 appearances and 123 points (4.73 on average).
