Nilüfer Hatun

Nilüfer Hatun ( Ottoman نيلوفر خاتون Nilüfer Hatun , İA Nīlūfer Ḫatun ) was the wife of the second Ottoman sultan Orhan I and mother of the third sultan Murad Hüdâvendigâr and daughter of the Christian lord of Yarhisar . Before converting to Islam , her name was probably Nenuphar (Greek for water lily plants ). Little details are known about her life.

Life

According to tradition, she was engaged to the Byzantine lord of the castle (Tekfur) of Belokoma (today: Bilecik ). Orhan's father Osman Gazi , the founder of the Ottoman ruling house , is said to have kidnapped her in 1299, according to Turkish sources, to make her the wife of his then twelve-year-old son Orhan. The kidnapping is described in İdris-i Bitlisî and Neşrî . Byzantine sources give no information about this.

Nilüfer Hatun was the mother of the third sultan Murad and of Suleyman Pasha, the conqueror of Rumelia . The river Nilüfer in Bursa as well as a bridge on this river and a dervish monastery are named after her. Nilüfer Hatun is said to have donated the bridge and the monastery . Nilüfer Hatun also had a mosque built in the Darülharp district in Bursa. In 1388 Murad I had a poor kitchen built with her name in İznik: the Nilüfer Hatun İmareti. A primary and middle school in Istanbul / Nişantaşı is named after her.

Nilüfer Hatun is buried in the Orhan Gazi mausoleum in Bursa / Tophane.

The early Ottoman chronicles also name them لولوفر Lulufer andاولوفر Ulufer .
