Niloufar Ardalan ( listen to ? / I ; * May 16, 1984 ; نیلوفر اردلان; also Niloofar Ardallani ) is an Iranian soccer and futsal player . Audio file / audio sample

Life and athletic career

Ardalan plays soccer for the Iranian club Zob Ahan Banovan and is the captain of the Iranian national team . For years she has been considered one of the best Iranian soccer players; her nickname is Lady Goal . In 2003 she was a member of the national team that played the first official futsal game for an Iranian women's national team. Three years later she was part of the team that played in Tehran against a women's team from the Turkish football club BSV Al-Dersimspor from Berlin-Kreuzberg . A planned return match in Berlin was canceled at short notice by the Iranian side. The documentary Football Under Cover was shot about this encounter .

Dispute over Iranian passport law

In 2015, 30-year-old Ardalan was nominated for the Iranian futsal team to take part in the first championship for women of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC Women's Futsal Championship) from September 21 to 26 in Nilai , Malaysia . However, she could not take part because her husband, the well-known sports commentator Mehdi Toutounchi, who is actually considered a supporter of women's football , prevented her from leaving. He justified this with the youngest son's enrollment on September 23, which she had to attend.

In an interview, Niloufar Ardalan stated that her passport had expired and that her husband had refused to renew it. According to Article 18 of the Iranian passport law, this consent of the husband is required. She trained intensively and prepared for this championship. On Instagram , she wanted an exception for athletes and describes herself as a soldier and flag bearer of her country.

The exit ban for Niloufar Ardalan was answered, among other things, with a campaign by the online movement My Stealthy Freedom , which was launched in May 2014 by the journalist Masih Alinejad, who now lives in London. A few Iranian men posted the slogan “Now is the men's turn” on Facebook and under the hashtag #itsmensturn on social media in Iran, calling for a change in the passport law. Women used the hashtag #WeAreAllNiloufarArdalan. Other Iranians saw the issue as a purely private matter: if they cared about their family more than football, it would never have been an issue, the campaign met with little response in Iran. After civil society protests after the Iranian presidential elections in 2009 have been contained and crushed, there has been a rather standstill. Women's rights in Iran are still restricted in many ways. Iran is one of the few countries in the world that has  not signed the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women .

In November 2015, Ardalan was able to travel to Guatemala to participate in the Futsal World Cup after she went to court and the authorities issued her a one-time exit visa against her husband's wishes.

After the husband of the Paralympic archer Zahra Nemati tried to prevent her from leaving for a sporting competition, a new passport law was passed in Iran. Afterwards, instead of the husband, the authorities decide on the departure of women who want to take part in sports competitions, academic and cultural conferences and festivals, who want to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca or who need medical treatment abroad.

Movie

In September 2018 the film Araghe Sard ( The Permit , English title Cold Sweat ) by Soheil Beiraghi was released, which is based on the story of Niloufar Ardalan's departure. The leading actress Baran Kosari lost 20 kilograms and trained in futsal to portray the main role, while Amir Jadidi played her husband. The film was rarely seen in Iran because it was boycotted by the most important cinema chain Hozeh Honari . It was released in France in November 2018 under the title La Permission . The Association of Iranian Filmmakers protested publicly against the “illegal boycott” by the cinema chain, which is affiliated with a state-supported Islamic propaganda organization. When the film was to be shown for the first time at the Fajr International Film Festival in February 2018 - where it also won two awards - Niloufar Ardalan's husband, Mehdi Toutounchi, tried to prevent this by means of an injunction, but later withdrew his request.
