Nils Horner

Nils Georg Anthony Horner (born December 5, 1962 in Borås , Sweden , † March 11, 2014 in Kabul , Afghanistan ) was a Swedish- British journalist and war reporter .

Life

Horner was born the son of a Swedish art teacher and a British woman. He had both nationalities . After completing his studies in journalism, he worked for the local newspaper Borås Tidning in the 1980s . From 1991 he worked as a freelance journalist in New York City before becoming a foreign correspondent for Swedish radio in 2001. He was the chief journalist at the overseas studio in New Delhi , reporting mainly from Asia and the Middle East . In 2001 he was awarded the Marcus Ölanderpriset for his journalistic activities .

Horner was shot dead on the street in the Afghan capital Kabul on March 11, 2014. According to the chairman of Sveriges Radio , he was one of the “very best and most experienced correspondents” of the public broadcasting group. One day after the attack , the Islamist group “Afghanistan's Islamic Movement Fidai Mohaz” (Fidai-e Mahaz) confessed to the act. The perpetrators claimed in their letter of confession that Horner was a spy for the British secret service MI6 .
