Nils Müller (* 1982 in Duisburg ) is a German gallery owner, photographer and former graffiti artist.

Life

Müller was born in 1982 in Duisburg as the son of a social worker and the musician and actor Helge Schneider . He grew up in the Ruhr area , first in Essen, then later in Bochum.

Even while still at school he developed a profound interest in visual arts, aesthetics and music. He came into contact with graffiti early on and began actively spraying. He became an integral part of the scene and traveled the world with other artists, always looking for new surfaces to paint, especially trains and subways.

After secondary school, Müller completed his technical diploma at a high school for design and moved to Heidelberg, initially for an internship with a spray can manufacturer. There he began to devote himself to photography, worked as an assistant for a photographer and later became self-employed. At the center of Müller's work was the documentation of graffiti and the tense moments of its creation. Two illustrated books were created from these recordings, Bloom Time (2009) and Vandals (2013).

Today Müller photographs musicians, actors and artists, including Marina Abramović , Udo Lindenberg , Lars Eidinger , Mavi Phoenix , Yung Hurn , Nas , Haftbefehl and Alex Katz . The recordings are direct and close and always take place in authentic situations. Müller's photos have appeared in the New York Times , Die Zeit and Galore . His clients include the music labels Universal and Sony . Müller's book project Wertical, which deals with visual culture, also emerged from his photographic activities.

After moving from Heidelberg to Cologne in 2010, Nils Müller opened the Ruttkowski68 gallery , named after DJ Sven Ruttkowski, who died suddenly and with whom Müller was close friends. At first, the program was shaped by subcultural influences: mainly works by the artists that Müller had previously sprayed were exhibited.

Today the gallery represents around ten artists, including COPaeffgen , Conny Maier, Stefan Marx , Joakim Ojanen and Paa Joe . The artistic practices range from painting and sculpture to video and installations.

Nils Müller works according to his own rules without wanting to provoke. The autodidact brings people and scenes together, many of which still believe that they should be strictly separated. Being a gallery owner and a photographer at the same time is not a contradiction in terms for him, but actually just a logical addition. Nils Müller has not sprayed since his daughter was born.
