action

1918, in the power vacuum at the end of the First World War : The Republic of Estonia proclaimed its state independence from Russia . After the withdrawal of the Imperial German troops from the Baltic States , the young Estonian state had to assert itself militarily against Soviet Russia and the Bolsheviks in the Estonian War of Freedom from 1918 to 1920 .

The focus of the action is on young Estonian high school students. The main character is Henn Ahas, who comes from a poor family. Henn initially hesitates to go to war for the patriotic cause. It was only when his hometown Tartu was attacked by the Red Army that he decided to volunteer with his schoolmates to answer the call to arms. He is now fighting against the communists for the independence of Estonian democracy. Will he find fame, recognition and love for Marta from the wealthy neighbor family - or will only his name remain on the marble tablet for the fallen?

Movie

The Estonian-Finnish co-production was directed by Estonian Elmo Nüganen . Together with the Estonian producer Kristian Taska he wrote the script based on the novel by Albert Kivikas . The film had a considerable budget of 24 million Estonian crowns . Nimed marmortahvlil premiered on November 1st, 2002 in Tallinn . It became a huge hit in Estonia.

After the feature film Noored kotkad by the Estonian director Theodor Luts from 1927, Nimed marmortahvlil is the second Estonian feature film to deal with the Estonian War of Independence.

Novel

The film is based on the novel of the same name by the Estonian writer Albert Kivikas . It appeared in three parts in 1936. In the novel, Kivikas processes his own experiences as a soldier in the Estonian War of Independence .

The novel was very influential as a patriotic work in Estonia in the interwar period and won important literary prizes. In February 1938 a theatrical version written by Albert Kivikas and August Annist premiered. In the emigration forced by the Soviet occupation of Estonia , Albert Kivikas wrote three serial volumes in Sweden . They appeared in 1948, 1951 and 1954.
