Life

After graduating in law from the University of Naples Federico II , Russo attended the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia . In 1966 he started working as a theater director, where he became known for productions of Bertolt Brecht , Samuel Beckett and John Osborne plays. At times he was also active as an author: Un muro di calce bianca and Self-made man are pieces from his pen, which he also premiered himself.

In 1972, Russo also staged for television for the first time when he brought the self-written Da lontano to the screen for Radiotelevisione Italiana , which he had shot in 16-millimeter format for the station's experimental series: in it he dealt with the extra-canonical cult of the wonderful Albert of Serradarce . Il giorno dell'Assunta followed in 1977 with Tino Schirinzi and Leopoldo Trieste in the leading roles, a surreal work filmed on empty Roman streets about the feelings and life of outsiders on the Assumption of Mary . The documentary Festa, farina, e… was created three years later .

The film L'ultima scena , shown in 1987, was dedicated to the Neapolitan dialect theater and featured prominent actors such as Aldo Giuffrè , Vittorio Caprioli , Marina Suma and Carlo Buccirosso . It wasn't until 2000 that Fondali notturni appeared with Massimo Ranieri , Ida Di Benedetto and Vittorio Viviani . In 2001 Russo participated in the directing collective of the documentary film Un altro mondo è possibile , which was created on the occasion of the Genoese G8 summit , and in 2002 in the similarly conceived La primavera del 2002 - L'Italia protesta, l'Italia si ferma . Scossa followed in 2011 , which he directed with Ugo Gregoretti , Citto Maselli and Carlo Lizzani with the participation of Amanda Sandrelli , Paolo Briguglia , Lucia Sardo , Massimo Ranieri and Gianfranco Quero . This work about the earthquake in Messina in 1908 was shown at the Venice Film Festival 2011 . With Salvatore Pecoraro , Alessandro Rossetti and Pasquale Scimeca , Russo is the author of Lo stato delle cose. Vizi privati, pubbliche virtù nel cinema italiano , a white paper on the situation of Italian cinema at the turn of the millennium.
