Nino Tamassia (born December 1, 1860 in Revere (Lombardy) , † December 11, 1931 in Padua ) was an Italian lawyer, politician and legal historian.

Life

Giovanni Tamassia was born the second son of Serafino and Elisa Malagola. His older brother was Arrigo Tamassia , a medic , and he also had a sister.

After completing his law degree at the University of Pavia , Pasquale Del Giudice made him study legal history. He learned primarily from Rudolph Sohm at the University of Strasbourg , where he also completed his studies. Then he worked as a freelance lecturer in Pavia. In 1886 he was appointed to the University of Parma , where he began his work on November 28 of that year. However, he moved to the University of Pisa on May 13, 1888 and taught at the University of Padua from August 8, 1895 . From 1910 to 1919 he headed the law faculty. With Carmelita Centazzo, his wife, he had the daughter Mirella.

As a professor for the history of Italian law, Tamassia mainly dealt with Germanic law and its relationship to Roman . In dealing with Francesco Schupfer, he relativized the importance of Germanic law and its influence on legal history.

From 1905 to 1910 he was a member of the Consiglio superiore della pubblica istruzione , a body that dealt with education in the country at the highest political level. He had been a corresponding member of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti , since May 22, 1897, and a full member from July 19, 1906. Eventually he became Vice President on February 2, 1926 and President of the Institute on February 19, 1928 (until 1930). He also became the corresponding Socio of the Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Venezie on November 5, 1899 and its full member on November 10, 1918. He was also president of the Accademia galileiana di scienze, lettere e arti of Padua from 1918 to 1920 and in 1921 resp. 1926 member of the Accademia dei Lincei .

Tamassia took part in the First World War, where he had previously campaigned for Italy's interference in the war. On October 6, 1919, he became a senator for the Kingdom of Italy .
