Nizar Semaan

Nathanael Nizar Wadih Semaan (born January 1, 1965 in Baghdida , Ninawa , Iraq ) is a Syrian Catholic clergyman and Bishop of Adiabene .

Life

Nizar Semaan studied at the Patriarchal Seminary in Charfet and at the University of St. Esprit in Kaslik . He was ordained a priest on November 1, 1991 in Qaraqosh .

Until 1997 he was initially active in the pastoral care of Beirut and Karakosch. He then studied in Rome and received his doctorate in liturgy in 2002 from the Faculty of Studies on the Eastern Church of the Pontifical Oriental Institute . Since 2005 he has been responsible for the pastoral care of the Syrian Catholic believers in Great Britain and has held the title of Choir Bishop .

The Holy Synod of the Syrian Catholic Church elected him Coadjutor Archbishop of Mosul . Pope Francis approved the election on March 27, 2019. He was ordained bishop by the Syrian Catholic Patriarch of Antioch , Ignatius Joseph III. Younan , on June 7, 2019 in St. Mary's Church in Baghdida ( Qaraqosh ). Co- consecrators were Boutros Moshe , Syrian Archbishop of Mosul , and Ephrem Yousif Abba Mansoor , Syrian Archbishop of Baghdad .

On June 28, 2019, he was appointed the first bishop of the Adiabene eparchy, which was established on the same date . The inauguration took place on August 24, 2019 in the Cathedral of the Queen of Peace in Ankawa near Erbil .
