Non-Fiction , sometimes called Non Fiction , is an American metal band from New Jersey . It existed from 1988 to 1996 and reformed in 2009.

Band history

After Hades broke up, their singer Alan Tecchio switched to Watchtower . Hades guitarist Dan Lorenzo began to write songs after a short break and to play them with musicians from the band Mucky Pup , especially singer and guitarist Dan Nastasi . Some of these songs came on Mucky Pup's third album. Others were used for the debut of Non-Fiction, as the band soon called themselves. A demo was recorded in 1988. With Nastasi on vocals, a self-titled EP , also known as the Green EP , was published on Arena Records in 1990 . The management of the band Rush approached the musicians and made them an offer. Now Lorenzo had to put together a fixed line-up. Since Nastasi also began to form Dog Eat Dog , Lorenzo contacted his ex-Hades colleague Alan Tecchio, who had returned to New Jersey from his excursion with Watchtower and took over the vocals instead of Nastasi. Kevin Bolembach was recruited as bass player, drummer Mike Cristi had been with the band from the start. However, the band fell out with the rush management, as they said they did not want to receive an artificial image. The band then signed a contract with Grand Slamm . In Europe, the albums were released on the Steamhammer / SPV label .

Despite a one-time reunion show with Hades in 1991, non-fiction were still active and in the same year released the rather hard and sometimes groovy album Preface , which had little to do with Hades' Power Metal . In 1992 In the Know was released , which was a bit more melodic and also contained acoustic guitar sounds. The album received some media attention, the video for Reason to Live was played on Headbangers Ball . In 1993 the band toured with Overkill and Savatage . After that it became more quiet about non-fiction. After the less noticed album It's a Wonderful Lie (1996), the band broke up.

In 2009 the band reunited for at least one show.

style

Non-fiction played mainly in slow or mid-tempo metal, the riffing of which was partly based on Black Sabbath or Soundgarden . In addition there were Power Metal influences (especially Tecchio's high but always melodic vocals, also some unreleased riffs by Hades were used) as well as some borrowings from the beginning Groove Metal or Alternative Metal wave. The harder pieces were often interrupted by melancholy , sometimes acoustically played passages or pieces (e.g. Next to Nothing by In the Know ). Tecchio's texts mostly dealt with very personal topics and personal experiences.
