Dog Eat Dog is an American crossover band from New Jersey , founded in 1991, combining styles such as hardcore punk , heavy metal and hip hop . They are considered by many to be the pioneers of the crossover . Their style of music, which was innovative at the time and heavily geared towards party, led to a boom in the music business in the mid 1990s. The instrumentation of Dog Eat Dog differs from other bands in the genre in that it includes a saxophone .

history

Early Years (1989 to 1993)

The band Dog Eat Dog was formed in 1989 around Mucky Pup , a crossover band that was quite successful in New Jersey. In the summer of 1989, Dan Nastasi left Mucky Pup and began writing his own songs with Sean Kilkenny and Dave Neabore. The singer of this new group soon became John Connor, a former school friend of Sean, who at the time already had experience as a front man in various bands. Brett Austin was added as a drummer . Eventually they asked their good friend Kevin Reilly to play the saxophone for the band.

The first gig took place in the band's rehearsal room in front of 50 people. In particular, the interplay of guitars, vocals and saxophone met with enthusiasm. A while later, Dog Eat Dog began performing in clubs in and around New Jersey. They already had experience with live performances through their former bands. Eventually producers and record labels took notice of the group. In 1993 the EP Warrant was released with moderate success . Dog Eat Dog allowed themselves a little joke with the title. The year before, the American glam metal band Warrant released the album Dog Eat Dog .

All Boro Kings and Play Games (1994 to 1998)

A year later, the band made their breakthrough with All Boro Kings . With the release of this album, guitarist Dan Nastasi, who later founded his own band Nastasee , decided to leave the band for family and professional reasons. Parris Mayhew temporarily took over his position. A European tour followed, where Dog Eat Dog appeared as the opening act for Biohazard . After the tour Mayhew left the band. Marc DeBacker joined the band in his place. A little later, drummer Dave Maltby Dog Eat Dog left for personal reasons and was replaced by Brandon Finley. In addition, Scott Mueller was hired as a saxophonist. Dog Eat Dog had the largest following in Europe. While they often appeared in smaller clubs in the USA, they played arena-sized concerts in Europe and were also represented at many festivals; the biggest was the 1995 Dynamo Open Air in the Netherlands.

Play Games appeared in 1996 . For this album, Dog Eat Dog worked with Ronnie James Dio ("Games") and RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan ("Step Right In"). The release of the album was followed by an extensive tour with performances at festivals such as PinkPop and Roskilde.

Amped and Walk with Me (since 1999)

In the summer of 1999, the album Amped was only released in Europe, but not in the USA, which was the main trigger for Dog Eat Dog to split from their former record company Roadrunner Records . A year later, Roadrunner Records released In the Dog House: The Best and the Rest , which mostly consisted of remixed versions of the old tracks. Dog Eat Dog distanced themselves from this album because they were no longer under contract with Roadrunner at the time of publication and therefore had no say in the material.

Since 2000, Dog Eat Dog toured mostly through Europe's clubs and collected new material. In 2003 they found a new management team in Vibra and came into contact with Claus Grabke . With him they worked on songs like "MILF", "Hell Yeah", "Cannonball" and "Undivided" for their new album. In the latter, Marta Jandová from Die Happy sings as a guest singer. While working on Walk With Me , Universal released the live DVD Dog Eat Dog - Live at Dynamo in 2005 with the 1995 appearance at Dynamo Open Air. On May 26, 2006, the studio album Walk with Me was released. In the same year it was announced that founding member Sean Kilkenny had left the band for personal reasons. Roger Haemmerli temporarily took over his role from the Swiss band Henchman until a replacement for Kilkenny was found in May 2006 with Matt Salem. In April 2007 he surprisingly left Dog Eat Dog. His place was taken by Thumb guitarist Axel "AX" Hilgenstöhler. The next few years the band spent a lot of time on various tours around the world. In 2009 the “15th Anniversary of All Boro Kings” tour took place, for which guitarist Roger Haemmerli came back to the band and replaced Axel Hilgenstöhler for all concerts. The following spring, Dog Eat Dog began their 20th anniversary tour. This tour also took her to Europe with several concerts in the USA.
