Norbolethone , also norboletone ( INN ), is an anabolic steroid that was first synthesized in the 1960s in the Wyeth Laboratories in Philadelphia , but never reached market readiness .
Since norbolethone was relatively unknown for a long time and never commercially available, the doping tests carried out in competitive sports were not tested for the presence of the substance. The use of the strongly anabolic substance in competitive sports therefore offered opportunities to increase performance for a long time without attracting attention in doping tests. Don Catlin , director of the Olympic Analytical Laboratory in Los Angeles at UCLA , found norbolethone in a doping test carried out by track cyclist Tammy Thomas in 2002 after he was unable to find any illegal substances in a first attempt despite abnormal blood counts. It is believed that norbolethone is now made in laboratories in China or Europe .
