The North Sea is a suction dredger operated by the Weser-Jade-Nordsee Waterways and Shipping Authority. The owner is the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) in Berlin.

history

The suction excavator was built at the O&K Orenstein & Koppel AG shipyard in Lübeck . The keel was laid on October 10, 1977, the ship was launched on December 17, 1977, and the ship was completed in May 1978.

technology

The ship is propelled by two eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines from the manufacturer MaK Maschinenbau , each of which acts on a controllable pitch propeller . The motors have an output of 3530 kW each. The ship also has a bow thruster .

For use as a dredger, the ship is equipped with two side suction pipes, each with a diameter of 1 m. The maximum excavation depth is 29 m. When the hopper is loaded, excess water is directed back outboard via overflows. Filling the hopper space takes about 40 minutes, and dumping the dredged material takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

The ship can e.g. B. in the course of his readiness in the emergency command (partner of the Maritime Security Center MSZ) in the North Sea also be used in the fight against oil spills. For this purpose, there are 22 m long booms on both sides of the ship, via which 600 and 1000 t of oil-water mixtures can be picked up from the water surface per hour.
