The sailing ship Nordstjernen (German: Polarstern ) is a former fishing vessel that is now in service as a traditional ship under the German flag.

history

Construction and commissioning

The Nordstjernen was built in 1920 in the Danish shipyard Gebrüder Nipper in Skagen . Equipped with a two-cylinder Alpha engine with 40 hp she ran in March 1920 from the stack . The motorization resulted in shorter fishing times when fishing with line reels compared to non-motorized fishing vessels, which gave this type of ship the name shark cutter.

commitment

Under her first skipper and owner Harald Nordmand, she sailed in the North Sea for the first few years and landed a. a. in English ports such as Grimsby to sell their catch. The Nordstjernen was fishing with changing owners and skippers until 1968.

Conversion to a recreational cutter

After more than half a century in fishing, the Nordstjernen was renamed Galathea in 1972 and 1973 and converted into a recreational ship, like several other wooden fishing trawlers during that time. In 1978 she was named back to Nordstjernen and entered in the Hamburg ship register. After further modifications and changing owners was Nordstjernen by the newly formed Partenreederei adopted S / S Nordstjernen and has since operated stated to be non-commercial.
