Norman A. Lebel

Norman Albert Lebel , actually Norman Albert LeBel (born March 22, 1931 in Augusta (Maine) , † December 21, 2003 ) was an American chemist ( organic chemistry ).

Lebel graduated from Bowdoin College with a bachelor's degree in 1952 and received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957 . From 1952 to 1954 he was a chemist at Merck . In 1957 he became an assistant professor and in 1964 a professor at Wayne State University . From 1971 to 1978 he headed the chemistry faculty there. 1983/84 he was interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts. In 1996 he retired.

He dealt with stereochemistry, mechanisms of elimination reactions, nitron and nitrogen heterocycles , addition to olefins , polycyclic molecules with bridges and new synthesis reactions. The LeBel reaction is named after him.

From 1961 to 1965 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry . He had 32 doctoral students at Wayne State University. In 1996 he received the Paul G. Gassman Distinguished Service Award from ACS (Organic Chemistry Section).
