Norton Point Beach is a 254 acres (1 km² ) nature reserve near Edgartown in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.
Protected area
The sanctuary is owned by the county but is administered by the trustees. The 2.5 mi (4 km ) stretch of beach connected Martha's Vineyard to Chappaquiddick until a devastating hurricane tore a gap in the land bridge in 2007. The total of 4.5 mi (7.2 km) of hiking trails are therefore accessible from both sides, but no longer connected. Due to severe erosion, there are only 1.8 mi (2.9 km) of driveways for beach buggies.
The area is an important habitat for nesting seabirds, but also offers high recreational value for anglers, swimmers and bird watchers. Due to strong ocean currents and significant surf return currents , swimming at Norton Point Beach - especially in the area of the breakthrough - can be life-threatening. In addition, sharks are attracted by the seals that live on the offshore sandbanks .
