Mytoi is the name of a 14  acres (5.7  hectare ) nature reserve on the Edgartown Island Chappaquiddick in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

history

In the late 1950s, Hugh Jones, who lived in Edgartown and had a professional background in Japanese architecture, began building a Japanese garden . He spent so much time there that he him as my toy ( German  my toy ) called; he headed the garden with the letters MYTOI, after which it is still named today.

Jones was a builder, designer and gardener at the same time until his death in 1965 and carried out all the planting personally. His family then gave the garden to the landscaper Mary Wakeman, who also lived in Edgartown. She continued the Japanese design of the garden and developed it into a popular destination. In 1976 she transferred it to the Trustees of Reservations for further care and maintenance.

In August 1991, Hurricane Bob wreaked havoc on Martha's Vineyard and completely devastated Mytoi . However, with the help of landscape architect Julie Moir Messervy and other volunteers, the trustees were able to fully restore the garden so that it is now accessible again to visitors.

Protected area

The protected area is accessible free of charge and offers a quiet retreat. It is surrounded by a pine forest and has a small island in the middle of a lake, a rock garden and various native and non-native plants. A footpath leads to Poucha Pond and the salt marsh located there .
