Nosferatu is agenus of cichlids (Cichlidae)foundin northeast Mexico in the catchment area of river systems that flow into the Caribbean. The species of the genus were originally assigned to the genus Herichthys and only transferred to the newly established genus Nosferatu in 2014.
features
The eponymous feature that distinguishes Nosferatu from Herichthys is the longer pair of teeth on the jaw symphysis compared to the rear teeth . Further characteristics are the dark coloring of the underside during reproduction, which not only includes the belly, but extends on the underside of the head to the nostrils, the scaling of the gill cover , the shape of the pelvic fins, the low dorsal fin that occasionally extends over the the front third of the caudal fin is enough and a long, elastic appendix that sticks to the sack-shaped stomach.
The species of the genus Nosferatu are 12.5 to 40 cm long.
Types and distribution
There are currently seven species of the genus Nosferatu :
- Nosferatu bartoni ( Bean , 1892); endemic in the upper Rio Verde and in the Laguna de la Media Luna in the river system of the Río Pánuco , San Luis Potosi .
- Nosferatu labridens ( Pellegrin , 1903); in the river system of the Río Pánuco.
- Nosferatu molango (De la Maza-Benignos & Lozano-Vilano, 2013); endemic to the Laguna Azteca near Molango in the state of Hidalgo .
- Nosferatu pame (De la Maza-Benignos & Lozano-Vilano, 2013); Rio Tamasopo in San Luis Potosi.
- Nosferatu pantostictus (Taylor & Miller , 1983); in the river system of the Río Pánuco from the Río Sabinas to the Laguna Tamiahua on the Caribbean coast.
- Nosferatu pratinus (De la Maza-Benignos & Lozano-Vilano, 2013); Rio Salto in San Luis Potosi.
- Nosferatu steindachneri (Jordan & Snyder, 1899); endemic to Tamasopo , Gallinas and Ojo Frio in the river system of the Río Pánuco.
