Nossa Senhora do Monte is a village in the middle of the island of Brava , Cape Verde . It had 271 inhabitants in the 2010 census and is located at an altitude of 770 meters above sea level.
location
Nossa Senhora do Monte is roughly in the middle of the island on a ridge. It is connected by a well-paved road to the island's capital, Vila Nova Sintra , about 7 km away . A few kilometers south is the village of Campo Baixo , which can also be reached via a good road. The small port of Fajã de Água on the west coast of Brava can be reached from Nossa Senhora do Monte downhill via a hiking trail. The highest mountain on the island of Brava, the 976 m high Alto de Fontainhas , can also be reached via a hiking trail.
history
Nossa Senhora do Monte was founded in 1826 and a few years later it was a bishopric. However, most of the bishops did not reside on Brava for long periods of time. Nossa Senhora do Monte has been a place of pilgrimage since 1862 .
Sights and infrastructure
The main attraction is the pilgrimage church, founded in 1826, which previously served as a bishop's church at times. The place is named after her (German: 'Our Virgin of the Mountain'; this refers to the Virgin Mary). Even today, the Bishop of Santiago holds services here when he is on Brava. From the forecourt of the church there is a beautiful view to the west coast of the island.
Opposite the church, a school has been set up in a large colonial villa. There is also a smaller Seventh-day Adventist Church in the village , built in the 1930s by missionaries who were remigrated from the United States.
In the main street of the village there are a few small shops and a simple restaurant. There are no accommodations for tourists in Nossa Senhora do Monte, but there is a guest house in the neighboring village of Cova Joana , about one kilometer away .
Transport links
Nossa Senhora do Monte can be reached several times a day from the island's capital, Vila Nova de Sintra, with the Aluguer buses typical of Cape Verde . They do not operate according to a fixed timetable, but leave when enough passengers have arrived.
