The former Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité collegiate church is the central church building in the old town of Saverne in the Bas-Rhin department in France . Today it functions as a parish church. It has been protected as an architectural monument since 1977.

history

Built in the twelfth century, the church initially only served the parish, from the late thirteenth century, with the patronage of St. Bartholomew , it was also used as a monastery church for the rulers . When this order was dissolved in 1482, it became the collegiate church of the Augustinian Canons .

At the entrance portal, the iron door fittings and the ancient standard are particularly noticeable. The inscription DIES IST DI HOLTZ DAU describes the length of the wood to be floated on the Zorn, determined by iron pins in the masonry .

Architecture and equipment

The oldest parts of the Romanesque church are the bell tower and most of the outer walls.

Inside, the pulpit from 1495 is one of the oldest preserved pieces of equipment. The stonemason's mark comes from Hans Hammer , who was a master builder at the Strasbourg cathedral and who also built the pulpit there nine years earlier.

The wood-carved statue of the Mother of God with the baby Jesus is from the same time, probably by Niklaus von Hagenau . A crucifix from the 16th century hangs in the choir.

To the north, parallel to the main nave, is the Chapel of Our Lady. It was laid out as a burial chapel in 1493 at the request of Albrecht von Pfalz-Mosbach, who was also Bishop of Strasbourg from 1478 to 1506. The graves were desecrated and destroyed during the secularization . In the chapel there is a pietà from the 15th century. There is also a sculpture made of linden wood. It is part of an Assumption of Mary, which probably comes from an altarpiece from 1486. It is shown how the apostles discover the empty tomb. The figures of the Virgin Mary and the angel no longer exist. The windows are the remains of the former collegiate church, which were brought together here and supplemented by contemporary windows in 1986.

The windows in the choir and in the main nave were almost completely destroyed in a bombing raid on the night of July 30th to 31st, 1918. The ones in the choir were made anew in 1920/1930 by the Ott frères company from Strasbourg; the modern windows in the north aisle are by Adeline Hebert-Stevens

organ

Already at the end of the 17th century there was an organ on the west facade , which was renovated in 1700 and replaced with other pipes in 1717. The instrument had 22 registers . On the west gallery is the organ by Sebastian Krämer from Mutzig from 1784, a mixture of styles from neoclassicism and rococo . An organ pipe bears the inscription: AETATIS SUAE XIII MEN. XAVE. FRANCIS. FILIA FRAN ADAMI MEYER ORGANISTAE ET MARIA MAGDA. DE WATTEVILLE HANC IMAM FISTULAM POSUIT THE IMA XBRIS 1784 ET KRAEMER ORGANUM FECIT . The organ was restored several times, first in 1827 by the Stiehr family of organ builders , in 1844 by Nicolas-Antoine Lété (1793–1872) and again in 1863/64 by Stiehr, both from Seltz . Here, the instrument received in the pedal a range of 20 instead of thirteen buttons. In 1921 Edmond Alexandre Roethinger (1866–1953) from Strasbourg expanded the range of the pedal to 32 keys and that of the manuals from 51 to 56. The number of registers was increased from 22 to 39. The wind machine was moved to the tower and switched from mechanical to electrical-pneumatic. The gaming table was restored and adapted by Auguste Stieber. In 1984/85 the organ was comprehensively renewed by Alfred Kern & fils from Strasbourg after part of the ceiling fell on the instrument in 1983.
