The Church of Our Lady Notre-Dame d'Étretat

The French Church of Our Lady Notre-Dame d'Étretat is located in the seaside resort of Étretat in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy . It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries under the protection of the Fécamp Abbey in Romanesque , Norman and Gothic styles and has been inscribed in the French list of monuments as Monument historique since 1840 .

Building description

Central nave

The dependency of the parish church in Étretat on the mother church in Fécamp can also be seen in the structural forms, such as the elongated floor plan, the crossing tower and the motif of the band of four-passports surrounding the interior. The floor plan is in the form of a classic Latin cross , but the transepts only protrude slightly beyond the line of the aisles. The tower-free west facade shows itself unadornedly smooth, corresponding to the basilica cross-section of the nave. The vault above the arched portal is decorated with geometric patterns, such as openwork lines, knurled ribbons and floral patterns. The outer side walls are structured with several simple wall strips. The first six bays in the nave with their regular round arches, similar ornaments as on the portal and massive pillars are still Romanesque. Then, at the end of the 12th century, the eastern crossing pillars and the choir saw the move towards Gothic. The last two bays before the crossing, the western crossing piers and the transepts are assigned to a construction phase of the early or mid-13th century. Most of the capitals are grooved . The oldest of them, in the choir, are adorned with strict, arch-shaped feuille d' eau ornaments.

Above the crossing there is a tower with a lantern on four pillars, as well as the strict, rectangular choir closure, a typical element of the Norman and English Gothic . The crossing tower brings light into the building through eight lancet windows .

In the 18th century, the rood screen that separated the choir from the nave was destroyed, as in most other French churches. The windows have been enlarged. After a fire, the bell tower had to be replaced and lost its tall, octagonal helmet. In the 19th century the arches were renewed, new colorful windows were installed and a new sacristy was added to cover the old choir. The tympanum on the west portal is also a new creation from 1866 with its echoes of style elements from Chartres architectural sculpture.

A statue of the Virgin Mary in the north aisle belongs to the interior. The organ, built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll , dates from the 19th century. The nave is adorned with flags reminding of Étretat's maritime tradition.

British soldiers of the First World War are buried in the cemetery around the church. At that time there was a military hospital in Étretat.

organ

The church houses an organ made by the renowned French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1852. Initially, it had only one manual with eight registers with the pedal attached . In 1870 Charles Carloni added the récit to it . In 1993 it was recognized as a Monument historique . From 1996 to 1998 it was restored by Claude Madigout and Jean-Loup Boisseau .
