Nouvi Zákon

Das Nôvi Zákon, 4th edition, Vienna .

The Nouvi Zákon is the first translation of the New Testament into Prekmurian . The text was translated from Greek by István Küzmics , a Slovenian Protestant pastor in Somogy County , and published in Halle an der Saale in Saxony-Anhalt in 1771 . The Nouvi Zákon was published four times, most recently in 1928.

Küzmics mainly used Kajkavian literature sources , but he also knew the Bible translation by Jurij Dalmatin and the writings of Primož Trubar . Although the number of Slovenes living in Hungary was small in the time of István Küzmics, he succeeded in creating the structure of the Nouvi Zákon from two merged Prekmurian dialects. He created neologisms and adopted language expressions from external sources: from Kajkavian , Central Slovenian, German , Hungarian , Latin and probably also from Slovak and Czech .

At the same time, Küzmics developed the thesis that the Slavs in Vas and Zala counties were Slovenes, but spoke their own language, the “Old Slovenian Language” or “ Vandalic Language” (sztári szlovenszki jezik, vandalszki jezik) , similar to the Slovenes in Hungary who use their own language and not the "language of Trubar".

Miklós Küzmics , a Catholic priest and important Prekmurian writer, used the Nouvi Zákon in 1780 for another, Catholic legitimized translation of the New Testament, the Szvéti evangyeliomi .

Nouvi Zákon joins Martin Luther's or Gáspár Károli's and Jurij Dalmatin's translations.
