Nowa Tschortoryja ( Ukrainian Нова Чортория ; Russian Новая Чертория Nowaja Tschertorija ) is a village in the southwest of the Ukrainian Oblast Zhytomyr with about 1,800 inhabitants (2001).
The village, first mentioned in writing in the 15th century, is the only village in the 28.052 km² district council of the same name in the north of the Ljubar district .
The village is located at an altitude of 243 m on the bank of the Slutsch , a 451 km long tributary of the Horyn , 16 km north of the Rajon center Ljubar and 80 km southwest of the Oblast center Zhytomyr .
Attractions
In the village there is a park with the grave church of the Orschewski family and the Baroque palace, built at the beginning of the 19th century and later restored in the pseudo-Byzantine style, Sadyba Pruschynskych-Orschewskych ( Садиба Прушинських-Оржевських ). It is an architectural monument of national importance and has housed an agricultural academy since the 1920s ( Новочорторийський державний аграрний технікум )
There is also a steam mill in the village, on the banks of the Slutsch, which was built in the second half of the 19th century and completed in the 1870s. The first steam mill in Zhytomyr Oblast, designed in an industrial style, is now used as a hydropower plant and is a listed building. The building has 7 floors on the river side and 5 floors on the bank side.
