The Nowaja ( Russian Новая ) is an approximately 90 km long, northwest tributary of the Chatangagolfs (funnel mouth of the Chatanga ) belonging to the Kara Sea in the north of the Krasnoyarsk region as well as Siberia and Russia ( Asia ).

River course

The Novaya arises about 900 km north of the Arctic Circle on the Taimyr Peninsula . In the Taimyr Depression there , the central part of the North Siberian lowlands , it flows from the Arylach Lake , which is located southeast of the nearby Kungasal Axis and northeast of the somewhat distant Portnjagino Lake at an altitude of about 68  m and is fed, among other things, by the Arylach Jurjach.

In the Taimyr Depression, the Nowaja, which runs through unpopulated areas, flows mainly east-south-east. Shortly before half of its flow stretch, it takes up its second longest tributary, the Little Novaya, and shortly before it flows into the Novaya lagoon , into which the Poperetschnaja flows, the Labasnaja, its longest tributary.

Finally, after flowing through the Novaya lagoon, the Novaya flows into the Chatanga Gulf at a height of m , which in particular, taking in the Chatanga , leads over to the Kara Sea located a little to the east as part of the Arctic Ocean ; about 37 km east of its mouth is the island of Maly Begichev in the Gulf .

Catchment area, lakes and tributaries

The catchment area of the Novaya is about 4160 km². Its tributaries include (viewed downstream): Kleine Novaja, Poperechnaja and, as a tributary of the Novajala lagoon, Labasnaja.

Climate, hydrology and flora

The winters on the Novaya are long and extremely cold, the summers short and cold. Most of the year the river is covered in ice . When the permafrost thaws in summer and ice and snow melt, strong floods often occur . The Nowaja flows through landscapes of frost rubble deserts and tundra with mosses and lichens as well as numerous lakes and swamps .
