Location & limits

Numedal is the south-western region of the great valleys in eastern Norway and extends along the Numedalslågen river from Dagali in the north-west to Kongsberg in the south. The valley comprises the four municipalities of Kongsberg, Flesberg , Rollag and Nore og Uvdal , all of which are located in Viken fylke. The largest cities are (from north to south) Dagali , Uvdal , Rødberg , Nore , Veggli , Rollag , Flesberg , Lampeland , Svene and Kongsberg . The region borders on Tessungdalen in the west and merges into the Hardangervidda in the northwest . The Hallingdal joins in the north and northeast, the Eggedal borders in the east and the Numedal merges into the Langdal south of Kongsberg .

Mountains & waters

The valley is separated from the neighboring regions by steep mountains. Smaller plateaus drop steeply into the valley. On average, more than half of the area is over 900 m above sea level (norw. Meter over havet ; short moh).

Coming from the Hardangervidda, the Numedalslågen river flows through the entire Numedal. Here it crosses the fjords Tunnhovdfjord (736–716 moh), Norefjord (265 moh) and Kravikfjord (262 moh) before reaching Langdalen and finally flowing into the North Sea at Larvik .

geology

The so-called Grundfjell , which is also known as bedrock, is mainly found in Numedal . It consists of Precambrian rocks and is dominated by gneisses and granites . The surface is often determined by sandy soils, but there are also clay and loam deposits. Silver deposits have been found in the southwest near Kongsberg. These formed in the Permian period and were dismantled by 1957.

Name story

The origin of the name is not clearly established. On the one hand, the name Numedal could come from the word Nauma , which was the old name of Numedalslågen. On the other hand, there could be a relationship with the Icelandic word naumr , which means narrow or narrow. Furthermore, the syllable nau often occurs in nautical terms, such as naust (Norwegian for boathouse) or navis (Latin for boat).

economy

Forestry is a traditional branch of the Numedal economy. Today it accounts for 22% of the entire economy. Agriculture only accounts for 1%. Another important branch of the economy is water management. Since 1928 there has been a water reservoir in Nore and the Nore 1 hydropower plant, which at that time was the largest hydropower plant in Northern Europe. Today several hydropower plants are in operation in Numedal, for example Nore 1 and 2 and Uvdal 1 and 2. In addition, tourism is becoming increasingly important in the region. This mainly relates to the medieval history of Numedal and outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. Winter sports areas are located in Kongsberg and the municipality of Nore og Uvdal .
