history

The history of the city goes back a long way. The first settlers were Aryans , who soon came under the rule of the Achaemenids . Later the city belonged to the empire of the caliphs , but native local dynasties such as the Qarinids continued to rule in Tabaristan . At the beginning of the 13th century , the Khorezm Shah Muhammad II followed and eliminated the second line of the Bawandids before the country was conquered by the Mongols and later by the Timurids . After the dissolution of the feudal government of Tabaristan, the city was under the influence of Abbas I. Under the following dynasties, shipbuilding was promoted ( Nadir Shah ), a road network was built ( Fath Ali Shah the Qajar ) and the town expanded as a tourist center. Today several ethnic groups live in the city, including Masanderans , who make up the majority, as well as the minorities Persians , Baluch , Turkmen , Lurs , Pashtuns , Kurds , Georgians and Armenians . The language spoken here, Masanderan or Tabari, is one of the oldest surviving languages in the country.
