Nusret Fişek

Nusret Hasan Fişek (born November 21, 1914 in Sivas , † November 3, 1990 in Ankara ) was a Turkish doctor and human rights activist who has taken on many social tasks and was best known as the president of the Turkish Medical Association .

Nusret Hasan Fişek was the son of the State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense , General Hayrullah Fişek and his wife Mukaddes Fişek (1891-1958). He attended primary and secondary school in Nişantaşı in the Şişli district of Istanbul and the grammar school in Kabataş (graduated in 1932). In 1938 he completed his medical degree at Istanbul University .

His first public assignment was as a course instructor at the Tropical Institute in Adana . After his military service he worked at a bacteriology institute of the Ministry of Health as an assistant, where he was appointed expert in 1941 and expert in the smallpox vaccination department in 1943 . In 1946 he went to the USA to deepen his specialist knowledge. Upon his return, he began working as an assistant at the medical faculty of Ankara University in 1951 . In 1956 he became a specialist there. During this time he was the first Turkish doctor to acquire a PhD degree from Harvard University in the field of bacteriology and immunology in 1954 . In 1958 he became the director of the Hygiene School in Ankara.

Nusret Fişek was appointed State Secretary at the Ministry of Health on July 15, 1960 after the military coup on May 27, 1960 . For a short time (August 25, 1960 - September 5, 1960) he represented the Minister of Health in his office. He was the architect of Law 224 on the Socialization of Healthcare. In 1966 Fişek left the ministry and became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health at Hacettepe University . Until the early 1980s, he was head of the public health department at Hacettepe University.

Between 1984 and 1990 he was the chairman of the Central Council (President) of the Turkish Medical Association . During this time he campaigned in particular for the abolition of the death penalty and the prevention of torture .

With his wife Perihan he had two sons, Kurthan and Gürhan.

In addition to chairing the Turkish Medical Association, Nusret Hasan Fişek was a member of the following associations and foundations: Founding and honorary member of the IPPNW (International Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War - Turkish: Nükleer savaşın Önlenmesi İçin Hekimler Derneği NÜSHED), honorary member of the Foundation for Family Health and - planning in Turkey, founding member of the Ataturk Thoughts Association, founding member of the Human Rights Foundation in Turkey , founding member of the IHD Human Rights Association , founding member of the Foundation for Social, Economic and Political Research in Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye Sosyal Ekonomik Siyasal Araştırma Vakfı TÜSES).
