The O&K MV 6a / MV 6b series are two-axle diesel locomotives with hydraulic power transmission , almost 100 of which were produced by the manufacturer Orenstein & Koppel for light shunting between 1953 and 1968. Some locomotives are still available as of 2020.

history

After Orenstein & Koppel had created a first post-war type range in 1950, a revised range of the second post-war generation followed soon after. The designation of the locomotives contained the type of power generation, the power transmission, about 1/20 of the engine power and an identification letter. In the described series MV 6a / 6b mean M = Motor locomotive V = type of power transmission chain transmit 6 the power class of the diesel engine, about 120 horsepower, and a and b the engine variants.

The locomotives were designed for shunting tasks in which small locomotives with an output of around 55 hp were no longer sufficient. Of the locomotives with both engine variants, 98 copies were produced, which were mainly delivered to private companies. The formed

Several locomotives were delivered to Italy and the Netherlands .

Constructive features

The two-axle shunting locomotives have a front end for the machinery and an end driver's cab. After several conversions, there is no longer any external distinction to be seen between the MV 6a and the MV 6b . There are differences between straight and sloping front ends, rounded and sharp front end corners and headlights placed on the buffer beam or integrated into the front end. The locomotives of the Westfalenhütte were often coupled driver's cab to driver's cab during operation and therefore had a transition door with bellows in the front wall of the driver's cab.

The locomotives were factory-fitted with a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from Orenstein & Koppel and a fluid transmission from Voith . The reversing gear screwed onto the fluid transmission was followed by the power drive of the locomotives via a chain wheel and roller chain on the two drive axles. Some locomotives were equipped with an indirect brake , the air reservoir was located behind the shunting step, which extends from the buffer beam to behind the front drive axle.

Delmenhorst-Harpstedter Railway

The only locomotive in the series that was also in use on a private railway was delivered to the Mariaglück mining company near Celle in 1956 . It stayed there until 1970, after which it was used by Kali und Salz AG in the same location. In 1976 she moved to the Guano Works in Nordenham , in 1988 to the Delmenhorst-Harpstedter Eisenbahnfreunde , where she received the number 1 . A year later, the machine moved to the Delmenhorst-Harpstedter Eisenbahn , which it designated with the number 8 . The locomotive shunted here for the company Moderne Bauelemente between Heiligenrode and Groß Mackenstedt .

In 1990 it suffered engine damage when a used six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from Daimler-Benz OM 402 with an output of 170 hp was installed as a replacement . After a few years it was sold to the reserve locomotive and in 2004 to Schweerbau GmbH in Stadthagen . The locomotive was still there in 2009.

Other preserved locomotives

The following companies, clubs or museums own type series locomotives:

Some vehicles are still in daily use in 2020, some were erected as memorials.
