It was first held in 1997 with the name Coca Cola 300, Mark Martin won the race, and two more times (1999, 2000), making him the most victorious driver of the O'Reilly 300.

Since the 2005 season, a second NASCAR Nationwide Series race has been held at Texas Motor Speedway, the O'Reilly Challenge .
