The DRIVEFORCOPD 300 is traditionally the first race of the season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and is held at Daytona International Speedway . It takes place the day before the Daytona 500 and is considered the most prestigious race on the Nationwide Series calendar. Until the 2002 season, it was the only race in the series that was held at Daytona International Speedway.

The race goes back to that on the Daytona Beach Road Course during the 1948 season of the so-called "Modified Series". Between 1950 and 1958 it was part of the Modified or Sportman Series, which were held on the beach course in Daytona Beach. It always took place on the course on the Friday or Saturday before the Grand National Series race.

For the 1959 season, the race changed to the newly built, 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. The day before the Daytona 500 was set as the race date, the race distance was either 200 or 250 miles. In 1966, the race was called the Permatex 300 and it became the second NASCAR-sanctioned race to be named after a sponsor. In 1968 it was transferred from the Modified Division to the reorganized Late Model Sportsman Division, now the Nationwide Series.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, the race was often ridiculed by the local media due to the regular occurrence of major accidents and mass crashes. Many of these accidents were blamed on the inexperience of some drivers and the older equipment.
