Oder flood 1997
When the Oder floods in 1997 , the water from the Oława River also caused severe damage to the neighboring communities. Much of the area between Oława and the Oder west of the city of Oława was flooded. The greatest threat to the environment came from the rubbish dumps at Huta Siechnice , which were basically protected from flooding, but could be flooded at any time.
Wroclaw water supply
The river plays an important role in supplying the city of Wroclaw with drinking water . The water is mainly treated at the Mokry Dwór plant in the village of Mokry Dwór ( Althofnaß ) approx. 15 km southeast of Wroclaw. The water from Oława is channeled into the sand layers on an area of 10.26 km² near the plant, from where it is taken through a system of wells. In 1971 a canal was built with which additional water can be supplied from the Glatzer Neisse . Some of the water from Oława is processed at the Na Grobli plant near the mouth of the Oława River into the Oder.
The Mokry Dwór waterworks produce approx. 51% of the water required in the city, a total of approx. 27 million m³ annually; in the Na Grobli plant it is around 48%, around 25 million m³ annually. Only about 1% of the water comes from the artesian wells in the Wrocław-Leśnica district ; this water is only supplied to this district.
