The O-19 class was a submarine - ship class of the Dutch Navy in World War II . The two boats of the class were intended for use in the Dutch colonies because of their long range . With the O-19 boats , snorkels for air supply were introduced for the first time.

Construction and construction features

The two boats were between 1936 and 1939 on the Wilton Fijenoord -Werft in Rotterdam built. Some sources claim that the O-19 class was based on the design of the Polish Orzeł class built in the Netherlands .

The O 19 and O 20 were two-hulled boats with a classic combination of two Sulzer diesel engines for cruising over water and two electric motors for submerged use. The engines drove through two waves, two propellers on. The trimd diesel system was used for the first time, a snorkel system for supplying air to the diesel engines when submerged, so that the batteries could also be charged under water. The hull was designed for diving depths of up to 100 m. The periscope depth was 15.5 m.

The barrel armament for use above water consisted of an 88 mm deck gun , two 40 mm Bofors anti-aircraft guns in single mount and a heavy 12.7 mm machine gun. O 19 was additionally equipped with a 20 mm Oerlikon - machine gun armed. Furthermore, the crew was equipped with light infantry weapons such as machine guns, rifles or pistols. Eight 21- inch (533-mm) torpedo tubes were installed as torpedo armament . Four pipes were mounted in the bow and four in the stern. A total of 14 torpedoes were carried. The boats were also able to lay sea mines. On both sides of the midship, ten vertical mine chutes with two sea mines each were arranged outside the pressure hull , so that a total of 40 sea mines could be carried.

The accumulator battery consisted of 2 × 96 cells with a capacity of 6,000  Ah . The boats were able to operate about 50 km under water at a speed of 8.5  kn (15.7  km / h ).

The boats could carry 8,500 liters of drinking water , 12,300 liters of washing water and a total of 2,900 liters of distilled water . The diesel supply enabled a range of 18,500 km when cruising over water. The size of the boats exceeded that of the early German Type IX offshore boats. The large supply of fuel and drinking water allowed operations in the Dutch overseas territories in the Caribbean and East Indies .
