Ovinton J'Anthony "OJ" Mayo (born November 5, 1987 in Huntington , West Virginia ) is an American basketball player . After just one year in the US college league NCAA with the USC team , he signed up as a so-called freshman in the 2008 NBA draft . The Minnesota Timberwolves secured the rights to the development player with the third pick of the first round. Before the start of the regular season, he was transferred to the Memphis Grizzlies . He prefers to play in the position of the shooting guard , but optionally also that of the point guard . His strength is above all the throw from the middle distance, but also the three-point throw and the pull to the basket.

Memphis Grizzlies (2008 to 2012)

On June 26, 2008, Mayo was elected third in the 2008 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves , but a day later he was joined with Marko Jarić , Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner in exchange for the fifth pick of the same draft Kevin Love , Mike Miller , Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins sent to the Memphis Grizzlies . In his rookie season he was able to score 30 or more points in seven games and averaged stats of 18.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. In the NBA Rookie of the Year election , he finished second behind Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls . He was named to that year's NBA All-Rookie First Team . The following season Mayo was able to achieve his career best of 40 points in a game against the Denver Nuggets . His average values dropped from 18.5 to 17.5 points per game.

The 2010-2011 NBA season began rather poorly for Mayo. He was late for training on November 20, 2010 and was involved in a brawl with teammate Tony Allen . In January 2011, he was convicted of taking an anabolic steroid and banned for ten games. According to his own information, he had unconsciously ingested the substance through a dietary supplement.

Dallas Mavericks (2012 to 2013)

After his Memphis contract expired, Mayo received offers from across the NBA. He then switched to the Dallas Mavericks to the German superstar Dirk Nowitzki . In Dallas, Mayo received a one-year contract plus an option for a second season. Mayo is supposed to compensate for the departure of Guards Jason Kidd and Jason Terry . However, Mayo missed the Mavericks entry into the PlayOffs and decided to leave the Mavericks after a year.

Milwaukee Bucks (2013 to 2016)

In July 2013, the Milwaukee Bucks announced Mayo's signing. He received a contract in Milwaukee until 2016 with a volume of 24 million US dollars. However, Mayo could not meet the expectation in the first year. He was pushed to the bench quite quickly and scored in 52 games, with 11.7 points, the worst value since the 2010-11 season. The Bucks ended the season as the worst team in the league. The following season the Bucks improved a lot. Mayo came back mostly from the bench and scored 11.4 points on average. In mid-2016, the NBA imposed a drug ban of at least two years, which prematurely terminated his employment with the Bucks. An application for re-admission to the NBA can be submitted in 2018 at the earliest.

Further career progression

Between April and June 2018, Mayo played for Atléticos de San Germán in Puerto Rico . In October 2018, he joined the Dacin Tigers in the Super Basketball League in Taiwan . In his first year, Mayo was also invited to the All-Star Game. After the end of the season he moved to the second Chinese division to the Hunan Jinjian Miye .
