Obed Asamoah

Obed Yao Asamoah (* 1936 ) is a leading Ghanaian politician. He served as Secretary of State and Attorney General and Attorney General during Jerry Rawlings' administration .

Career

Asamoah was first foreign minister of Ghana during the military junta under Rawlings and later under President Rawlings (since 1992). This made him the foreign minister with the longest term in office to date.

Asamoah was also Attorney General and Attorney General in 1994 acting during the first term as President under Rawlings. He also held this post for the entire second term between 1997 and 2001.

Asamoah became chairman of the Democratic Freedom Party, which was founded in 2006 . Before that, he had held the chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress since 2002 as the successor to Rawlings . There were rumors back in 2006 that Asamoah was a presidential candidate in the 2008 election. Asamoah denied these rumors and announced that he would support his party in the election campaign for the parliamentary elections that take place in the same year, but that he would not be available as a candidate for the office of President of Ghana himself.
