Mammoth Lakes off the Sierra Nevada

Mammoth Lakes is a popular winter sports destination . The Mammoth Mountain ski area is in the city, the June Lake ski area and other smaller areas are in the vicinity. The place emerged from a small mining settlement called Old Mammoth through planned development with the ski area. The place lives almost exclusively from tourism, the municipal administration is mainly financed by a tax of 13% on accommodation establishments (status 2010).

Local bus routes run to the ski areas in the region, and in the summer months the road into the Sierra also opens up the Devils Postpile National Monument and hiking trails, including the long-distance John Muir Trail along the mountain range. The Bluesapalooza Festival of Music & Beer takes place in the village every year in August .

history

The local Indians were Mono from the Paiute people . They lived on both the west and east sides of the Sierra Nevada, but traveled on foot to other regions to trade with various tribes. The story of European immigrants began in 1877 when four prospectors applied for a mining concession on Mineral Hill south of the present town along Old Mammoth Road . In 1878, the Mammoth Mining Company was formed to begin mining gold on Mineral Hill . As a result, there was a gold rush. At the end of 1878, 1,500 people settled in Mammoth City, the ever-growing mining camp. When the company was dissolved in 1880, the number of residents fell to less than 10 people by 1888.

Then, in the early 1900s, the town of Mammoth was established near Mammoth Creek. The original town's economic foundation was based on logging and tourism. The first post office in Mammoth Lakes opened in 1923. In 1955 the first ski lift was opened and the systematic development as a winter sports resort began. The place has grown continuously since then. In 1984 Mammoth Lakes became politically independent as an administrative unit ( incorporated municipality ), making it one of the youngest communities in California.

At the end of September 2008, the body of the adventurer Steve Fossett was found in the mountains above the village , who had a fatal accident there in September 2007 when his plane crashed.

On July 3, 2012, the city filed a motion for bankruptcy protection to Chapter 9 of the US Bankruptcy Code. The cause for this was an ongoing lawsuit by a real estate developer against the city, which it lost and was sentenced to nearly $ 43 million in damages.
