history

Von Velen plant at the splitting

In 1683 a lock lock was built at the beginning of the central canal. In 1727 the construction of the splitting canal was started from the central canal in order to drain the moor and to transport the cut peat away by ship. In 1777 the first lock was built in the area of the upper end, the so-called Third Verlaat is located opposite the Hotel Hilling at the end of the central canal.

The Erste Wiek is the first channel to branch off from the splitting channel. In 1791 the Erste Wiek was excavated so far that the first settler sites, also known as plaatzen, could be issued. About 400 meters further on, following the splitting canal from the junction of the Erste Wiek, the Umländerwiek was branched off. The first settlers were noted on the Umländerwiek as early as 1791. The Lüchtenburg Canal branches off at right angles from the Umländerwiek. The Lüchtenburg Canal is named after an observation post (to observe = to look) that was located on the way from Papenburg to Bockhorst. On a map from 1797 it is referred to as "Lugtenburg". In 1799 the fourth lock lock was built in the Umländerwiek (no longer available today).

After the First Wiek and the Umländerwiek, the Bethlehem Canal was dug as the third side canal for splitting; in 1794 the Bethlehem Canal was completed up to the corner at the corner of Barenbergstrasse. The name Bethlehem Canal is said to come from a lonely settlement that was reminiscent of the Bethlehem stable. In 1873, the Chemische Industrie AG was founded and set up production facilities at Bethlehem, today the "New Glassworks". In 1878 a glassworks was built at the current Obermoor housing estate, today the "Alte Glashütte". In 1871 the lock was opened at the level of the forester's house. The last section of the Splitting Canal was completed around 1898 and now extends as far as Börgerwald on the edge of the Hümmling . This means that the splitting canal is 12 km long, 7.5 km of which were dug in Papenburg area. During the Nazi era , the Bethlehem Canal was called Süderwiek.

Sights and buildings

  • The Old Tower , a replica of Riga's former lighthouse .
The Old Tower: The district's landmark is the Old Tower, a replica of the former lighthouse in Riga, which was built in the middle of the 19th century (inauguration in 1850). Interested citizens have set up a beacon in the old tower.
  • St. Michaelskirche: The story of St. Michael began in 1784 when a chapel was built at the intersection of Splitting and Umländerwiek on behalf of the Landsberg-Velen family. A deed of foundation of the diocese of Münster from the year 1785 finally approved the submissions of Pastor Frerking from the bottom end regarding the holding of the service in the chapel above. On October 16, 1869, the branch church became an independent parish. In September 1908, construction began on the new Michael’s Church. The church was completed in November 1910 and inaugurated on September 12, 1911.
  • St. Marienkirche: The long distances that the residents of the upper end had to accept in order to attend the service made the call for a second church louder and louder. On April 17th, the first service was celebrated by Pastor Brackel in the gym of the splitting school. On May 1st 1956 the foundation stone of the St. Marienkirche was laid. It was inaugurated by Auxiliary Bishop Johannes von Rudloff on May 1, 1957.

population

The top end was traditionally a district of the workers and peasants. The majority of the Obenend population originally lived on the canals that run through the upper end: Mittelkanal, Splitting, Erste Wiek, Umländerwiek, Lüchtenburg, Bethlehem. Due to the increase in the population, new building areas were opened up: Obermoor, Splitting West, An der Marienkirche, Mendelstrasse, Am Takelmast.

A traditional rivalry that is now a thing of the past was the soccer games between the sports clubs Germania 08 from the bottom end and Amisia 09 from the top end. Since 1994, the two clubs have merged to form SC Blau Weiß Papenburg .

education

At the top there are three primary schools: Michael School, Forest School and Splitting School. The Michaelschule Oberschule is the largest school in town.

In addition, the Historisch Ökologische Bildungsstätte (HÖB) is located here, where conferences and lectures take place. Schools and kindergartens often work with the HÖB.

Sports

At the top there are three sports fields, the sports park at the top of SC Blau Weiß 94 Papenburg , the sports field at the Michaelschule, which is also owned by SC Blau Weiß 94 Papenburg , and the sports field of Eintracht Papenburg . While Eintracht Papenburg only refers to the top end, SC Blau Weiß 94 Papenburg is active throughout the city. Eintracht Papenburg was founded in 1959. Blau Weiß Papenburg has been around since 1994, when Germania and Amisia merged.

Religions

There are two Catholic parishes at the top, St. Michael in the center of the top end and St. Marien am Splitting, the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Papenburg, the Evangelical Reformed church on the Splitting Canal and the Muslim community of the Fatih Camii Mosque on the Mittelkanal. The annual Thanksgiving Parade with 50 participating groups is a special attraction .
