The Oberbauenstock (also called Baberg by locals ) is a summit in the Uri Alps on the border of the cantons of Nidwalden and Uri in Switzerland . The summit cross is at 2116.9  m above sea level. M. and forms the highest point in the community of Seelisberg . It belongs to a mountain range together with the Zingel ( 1901  m ), Gandispitz ( 1996  m ), Jochlistock ( 2079  m ) and the Schwalmis ( 2246  m ).

tourism

In summer, crossing these peaks is a promising ridge hike, which, however, is reserved for experienced mountain hikers. The Oberbauenstock can also be climbed from Niederbauen via Schwiren. It is rarely visited in both summer and winter, in contrast to its northern neighbor Niederbauen, which is also very promising, especially since you can shorten the route from two sides by using cable cars.

geology

The Bauen – Brisen –Kette belongs to the geological group of the Helvetic Limestone Alps and forms a fold in the Drusberg blanket of the chalk .

Discussion about a repository for radioactive waste

In 1983 Nagra announced that the Niderbauenstock would be suitable for the construction of a repository for radioactive waste due to its geographical location and geological composition. Thanks to the construction of the Seelisberg Tunnel in the 1970s, the geological knowledge of the mountain was already extensive. In particular, the rock layer of the marl seemed to be suitable for the storage of radioactive residues.

The local population reacted with opposition to this announcement. On March 5, 1983, the citizens' initiative “Atomic Garbage Hiä Niä” was formed and around 150 people were present at its founding meeting. On the one hand, the opposition questioned the feasibility of a safe repository, on the other hand they criticized the choice of location: the population of the canton of Uri was not prepared to make another “national sacrifice” after the construction of the Gotthard railway and motorway.

In the same year, the citizens' initiative, together with the communities of Ollon and Mesocco, in which people were also against a repository, commissioned a study of their own on the feasibility and safety of a storage facility from the Ökos office , a consultancy for applied ecology . The study published in March 1984 expressed strong doubts as to whether the safety of a repository in the Oberbauenstock could be guaranteed and delegitimized Nagra's expertise. The Uri government also increasingly opposed the project and Nagra abandoned the Oberbauenstock site after 1993, only assessing the available marl rock layer as “only sufficient to scarce”.
