| Inflow of the Günz into the Oberegger reservoir | ||
The Oberegger reservoir , also called Oberegger Weiher , is a reservoir on the Günz between Oberegg , a district of Wiesenbach (Swabia) , and Deisenhausen . The retention basin in the shunt was built for the Oberegg hydropower plant, which went into operation in 1942 . The lake accumulates the water at night and releases it again during the day when more electricity is needed.
Use of the lake as a bathing lake
The Oberegger reservoir was a popular bathing lake until around 1970. Then the use shifted to the excavator ponds in the Günztal. The reason was the deteriorated water quality due to the increase in water birds. This later led to the designation of the nature reserve and the official bathing ban. As an alternative, the Oberrieder Weiher near Breitenthal has been expanded into a local recreation area .
Nature reserve
Since 1989 the Oberegger reservoir and the immediate bank area has been a nature reserve . The “Oberegger Reservoir” measures 42 hectares and is a nationwide important resting and breeding area for water birds, which often overwinter here.
