Prehistory as a local museum

The initiative to found a local history museum started in 1923 by the Volksbildungsverein. In 1932 and 1933, four museum rooms were designed. The teacher and local researcher Hans Seiffert played a key role in the planning and implementation of the museum concept, while the first chairman of the Franconian Forest Association and factory owner Gustav Weiß provided the necessary financial resources. The museum rooms were needed for other purposes at the end of the war, so that rooms for a local history museum were not available again until the school was expanded in 1955. Mayor Dr. Hans Michel and Rector Hans Seiffert reopened the museum in 1956. The various phases of textile production already took up a large part of the exhibition; there was also a geological section, a generally accessible archive, etc. a. with magazines, newspapers and classic local literature. Further exhibits were objects of everyday use and handicrafts and a manageable collection of weapons related to the city's history.
