location

The place is west of the Upper Harz and south of the core town of Badenhausen. The next largest city is Osterode am Harz .

history

Oberhütte was first mentioned in 1429 when Bernhard von Wolfenbüttel-Lüneburg allowed the operation of a "shore hut". The place was mentioned in 1539 as Oberhutte and in 1740 as Oberhütte and Hammerhütte am Glüsigteiche . The name probably refers to the ironworks above Neuhütte or Hammerhütte . An ironworks existed until 1725, which was attached to the Gittelde ironworks .

To the east of the village is the Wittkopp tunnel , which was in operation from 1950 to 1988 for the extraction of gypsum. Tracks of a mine railway lead out of the mouth hole , but this was only installed by the new private owner after the facility was closed.

With the transformation of the joint municipality Bad Grund (Harz) into a unified municipality, Oberhütte and Badenhausen became an independent district of the municipality Bad Grund on March 1, 2013.
